Solicitor and managing director Marcus Johnstone has been quoted by The Times and has written for LBC, discussing the scale-back of jury trials, the early-release scheme, and what Andy Burnham’s priorities should be as Britain’s new prime minister.
Writing exclusively for LBC, Marcus said that the policies pursued by Keir Starmer’s government would have ‘no substantive impact’ on court delays of prison overcrowding, adding in The Times that limiting the number of cases triable by a jury was an ‘ideological objective, designed to replace an ancient democratic principle with a more inquisitorial, European-style, judge-led criminal justice system.’
Instead of continuing with last government’s approach, Marcus instead urged Andy Burnham to consider instituting ‘common-sense changes’, including opening courts seven days a week, greater scrutiny of companies that fail to transport defendants to court in time, and expedited removal of foreign offenders in British prisons.
